The UN Security Council

The UN Security Council, in accordance with Article 24 of the Charter of the United Nations, is entrusted with the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN Security Council consists of 15 member states: five permanent and ten non-permanent, elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term, five each year.

 

The Security Council plays a leading role in determining whether there is a threat to the peace or an act of aggression.
