Guest lecture on the importance of intercultural communication

On April 15, 2025, as part of the study of the discipline “Cross-cultural communications in the service sector”, a guest lecture on the importance of intercultural communication in the professional field was held for students of the educational programs “Restaurant business and Hospitality”, “Tourism and hospitality innovation management” and “Tourism”.

The lecture was conducted by Marvin Phiri, a native English teacher from Malawi, an IELTS and TOEFL expert at the Get Education Educational Center with extensive international experience. His lively and interactive communication style, as well as personal examples from life and studies around the world, helped the participants to better understand the importance of cultural sensitivity in the field of hospitality and tourism.

During the lecture, students learned about barriers in international communication, and also discussed ways to effectively interact with representatives of different cultures. Of particular interest were real-life cases and practical advice on cultural adaptation and the formation of positive experiences.

The speaker paid special attention to the importance of foreign language proficiency, especially English, as an essential tool for successful interaction in an international professional environment.

Marvin Phiri also shared his experience of living in Kazakhstan, telling what his expectations were before his arrival and what discoveries he had already made on the spot. He noted the kindness and hospitality of Kazakhstanis, emphasized the richness of cultural traditions and expressed admiration for the students’ desire for learning and intercultural dialogue.

The guest lecture was organized by the teachers of the Higher School of Tourism and Hospitality – Burkitbay A., Koichubayeva D.

The translation of the speech was carried out by a graduate of our university, Kaikenova Tomiris, who demonstrated a high level of language training and professionalism.

Such events contribute to the professional and personal growth of students, develop their global thinking skills and willingness to work in an international environment. Thanks to Marvin Phiri for an interesting, inspiring and truly lively lecture!
