The International conference “The Future of the Eurasian Migration System” held by the Center for Regional Studies jointly with the University of Lisbon and the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS)
On October 9-10, 2023, the Center for Regional Studies at the Department of Regional Studies and International Relations of Turan University held an international conference jointly with the University of Lisbon (Portugal) and the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS/USA). The Conference examined a set of issues related to the current migration processes in Eurasia and their development.
The conveners of the international forum of scholars and experts dealing with migration issues were Professor of Turan University Dr. Ablet K. Kamalov and Research Fellow of the University of Lisbon Dr. Antόnio Eduardo Mendonça. Eight sessions of the two-day conference discussed 37 papers presented by scholars from 18 countries. The conference was held in a hybrid face-to-face and remote format: half of the participants presented their papers on-line. The keynote speakers who talked on theoretical and methodological issues of the Eurasian migration system were leading experts on migration and demography I.V. Ivakhnyuk (Russia), I.N. Molodikova (Hungary), S. Buckley (USA) and M. Düvell (Germany). Along with other important issues of the Eurasian migration processes, the conference participants also discussed the results of the research conducted by scholars from Kazakhstan (E.Y. Sadovskaya, S.B. Kozhirova, B.I. Rakisheva, L.F. Delovarova, A.K. Kamalov, A. D. Samay and D. М. Rakhmatulina).
Papers and discussions of theoretical and empirical aspects of the Eurasian migration system were positively assessed by the conference participants, the total number of which made up more than 50 people. The holding of such a significant forum of experts on migration is very important input for implementation of the research project “Migration factor in Kazakhstan-Chinese relations” (IRN AR19679244, funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan), conducted since 2023 by a group of researchers at Turan University under supervision of Prof. Ablet K. Kamalov.
