On August 29, 2024, in Astana, at the Park Inn by Radisson Astana hotel, a round table on the topic “Electoral Reforms in Kazakhstan as a Factor in the Development of Parliamentarism” was held. The event brought together leading experts, renowned scholars, as well as young Kazakhstani researchers and diplomats.
The round table was held in a hybrid format: some participants attended in person, while others joined the discussion via the Zoom platform. This format allowed for a broader range of participants. One of the key presentations was delivered by Professor, Doctor of Law Akif Firudinovich Suleymanov from the Higher School of Law at Turan University. Professor Suleymanov presented on “Civil Society’s Proposals in Electoral Legislation.” In his speech, he highlighted important aspects of civil society’s participation in the process of reforming electoral legislation and proposed specific initiatives to improve existing legal norms. His ideas sparked active discussion among the round table participants, emphasizing the importance of citizens’ opinions on political reforms.
The participants concluded that electoral reforms are necessary to further strengthen parliamentarism in Kazakhstan, and the opinions and proposals of civil society should be taken into account when drafting new legislative bills.
