On February 19, Turan University hosted the round table “Turan Flood,” bringing together leading scientists, experts, and representatives of the scientific community. The event featured and discussed a popular science essay by Professor R.A. Alshanov, dedicated to studying the history of floods in Kazakhstan.
The essay deeply explores the causes of floods and provides significant facts about Kazakhstan’s susceptibility to flooding. Analyzing the country’s history, land relief characteristics, and other factors, the author concludes that concrete solutions are necessary to eliminate the causes of flooding. Emphasizing this fact, the author suggests that “the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan should develop and implement effective measures to predict and counteract such a natural phenomenon as flooding.”
Additionally, the round table addressed and discussed the causes of the Aral Sea’s disappearance, one of the greatest environmental catastrophes of the 20th century. Participants examined the consequences of the lake’s disappearance, the impact of climate change on the region, and possible measures to restore ecological balance. Special attention was also given to issues of sustainable development, environmental security, and international cooperation within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and the Prague Agreement.
As a result of the round table, it was decided to promote the popular science essay “Turan Flood” among young people and the general public, as it is a valuable material reflecting the causes of floods and broader ecological issues. Participants of the round table also proposed translating the essay into English.
The participants discussed crucial environmental issues and agreed to join forces in finding effective solutions to overcome ecological challenges. Turan University will continue its active work in the field of sustainable development, supporting projects aimed at environmental security and the conservation of Kazakhstan’s natural resources.
